This is not the weekend in Las Vegas that you think! No bright lights, entertainment and fancy hotels for us. Guy and I arrived in Boulder City, NV (just outside of Las Vegas) on Saturday. We rode Bootleg Canyon, which is a mountain/downhill biking area. As you can see in the photos, it is a very jagged riding area with a lot of sharp granite rock. The trails skirt the hillsides with steep gravely exposure.
This is the top of the Mother Trail with a view of Las Vegas on one side and the road to Laughlin on the other
I love the florescent yellow-green lichen, it is so brilliant in the sun on the contrasting granite and lava rocks.
We drove over Hoover Dam on our way to White Rock Canyon where we would hike in and spend the night. The new bridge over the dam is still under construction. The photos make it difficult to really see the magnificence of this project.

We backpacked down this canyon to Lake Mojave and camped near the water. We arrived at dark, set up camp and then hiked another .5 mile to a natural hot spring. There are three pools dammed with sandbags in a tight slot canyon. There are votive candles and a lighter there too! The hot spring does not smell but beware of the parasite, do not ingest any water. We have been here before but it is always at night. We enjoy soaking in the hot water under the midnight sky shining with stars. Staying on the trail with our headlamps was tricky.
Funny Story – We were relaxing in the pool, just about ready to call in a night, when another man joined us. To my surprise, I could see out of the corner of my eye in the flickering light that he was buck naked! Okay, I can handle this, I will just keep my gaze forward while he positions himself in the water. Great, all is well, until he decides he has to stand straight up and bend over, not squat, to reach something under the water. He turned his back side directly in front of me, how could avoid that? WOW, what an interesting experience. Guy couldn’t believe what he was seeing either! So, needless to say, we were out of there!
The next morning, after we hiked out, we went to the Cottonwood riding area which is on the opposite end of Las Vegas from where we were.
We ran into the crew from Over the Edge Sports on both days! It’s always fun to see familiar faces in the industry!
Now it’s time to go home to recover and work. We’ll see what next weekend brings – more training I’m sure!

What no pictures of your hot tub buddy? Yuck!
I had to spare all of you the nasty visuals. I tried not to give too much detail, just enough to make you laugh, or not!
