I love how the water reflects in the sand waves on the canyon floor. It is peaceful and untouched. Very serene.

Guy and I went to Lake Powell to help a friend, Tyler, get his houseboat ready for the summer. Another of Guy's friends, Clint, went on a hike with us the first day before the rest of the help arrived.
We walked up the creek of Navajo Canyon and then cross country to the middle of the Butterfly drainage before we dropped into Butterfly.
Me (Chrystal) hiking up and out of Navajo to higher ground.

Clint - beautiful view of higher land above the Navajo arm.

This was a cool tight area. Yes we dropped all the way down to get through....
This was a beautiful canyon

The next day Tyler and Sam arrived and after everyone got back from church we hiked up West Canyon.

Half way up the canyon the afternoon thunderstorms came in. The rain was hard, the thunder was very LOUD and the lightning was so close. The thunder sounded like it would shatter the tall canyon walls, which made it sound even louder. The water level came up quick because of the quick heavy rain. I quickly put my wet suit on because I got cold with the rapidly falling temperature. We were all very nervous about a flash flood but also very curious about what it looked like ahead in the tighter slot. Guy and I back tracked out to an open area of the canyon to be safe. The rest of the guys went ahead to watch the awesome waterfalls. My adrenaline was pumping and I was scared but we (Guy and I) decided after a few minutes to continue forward and followed the rest of our group. The rain was a burst just above us so the water didn't build up further up the canyon to create a flash flood. After we got out of one tight, tall, slot area we could see that there was no danger. But you never know!

The walls are so tall and magnificent. You feel so SMALL.
We stopped here to camp under an overhang in case it rained. This was also a safe place where we could get to higher ground if it rained hard enough to cause a flash flood.
I am ready for dinner and bed. I was so tired. I had actually had the stomach flu and a very bad sinus infection with a sore throat and ear infection just a few days before.

The guys went up canyon the next morning and I opted out to sleep and get rested for the hike back. I am glad I stayed back. Even though I had a wet suit the water was FREEZING. Unfortunately, not all of the guys packed a wet suit. It was a long, hard hike through the almost- all black top section of the canyon. They had to have headlamps to see where to go. I waited for them for almost five hours. Good call on my part!

WOW
The walls and tight slot are unbelievable
The quicksand was plentiful on this hike. It took a lot of energy and strength to get out of it too. We all struggled in many places. This is the guys trying to climb out of the quick sand.
We look so miniature
Sam, Clint, and Tyler jumped off of anything they could. They are like little boys. This is Clint jumping in.
Me hiking down canyon. What a great weekend.
work hard, play hard, rider harder.
