Mother's Day Weekend - Guy & Grant Float Escalante River

The water on the Escalante River through the Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument is rarely big enough to run in a kayak. The run-off this year was longer than normal and Guy and Grant took the opportunity to run the river when it was available. It just happened to be over Mother's Day weekend. I was okay with that because I was tired from my girl's trip the previous weekend and I had a very busy spring schedule. I welcomed the break to stay home and relax for a few days. I did some deep cleaning and spent time with Taylor and Sadie. I have run this section of the river before in 2005. It is beautiful but it is also A LOT of work. You have to hike a few miles down to the river and then out again at the end. With all the gear it usually takes two trips. I'm glad they had a good time. They even came out a day early! This is a typical camp in the Escalante area. Backpacking gear scattered everywhere, lots of sand, and no chairs!
Awesome view of Steven's Arch. This is towards the end of the run at Coyote Gulch.
Indian ruins

The tall red walls along the river are magnificent. It's hard to appreciate without actually seeing it in person.
Grant looks ready for a fun boating adventure.

work hard, play hard, rider harder.
